"So, I guess we are who we are for alot of reasons. And maybe we'll never know most of them. But even if we don't have the power to choose where we come from, we can still choose where we go from there. We can still do things. And we can try to feel okay about them."
~Stephen Chbosky, The Perks of Being a Wallflower
It is my belief that the media we are exposed to when we are young can have an lasting impact on our impressionable minds. These things can help shape our personalities, understanding of human nature, and our entire world view. They can sway and shape the people we want to grow up to be, and do impact who we are today. We all see qualities in characters from the page and screen that we want to emulate. Music and art can be a revelation. Oftentimes we are exposed to a whole new way of thinking.
This forum is a place to delve into those very important outside influences that helped shape our identities. We can look internally and truly acknowledge and outline how these media affected us. It is part self reflection, recognition, and confession. Not only can this be a cathartic experience, but it gives us an unprecedented opportunity to understand each other better.
After we have summarized our own impactful works, we can then start to explore and review each other's. Do we see the same line of reasoning? Does this give us clues to the writer's outlook? Does this change how you see that person? Give you a clearer view of them? And most importantly, how did this work affect you?
I am encouraging complete honesty and openness here. This is a non-judgmental space. Because this is such a personal project, I will only be opening it up to family and our closest friends for now. If you do not feel that you can be 100% candid, please do not participate.
If this project interests you, please register above or comment in the Shoutbox below. I chose to use Proboards for its simplicity and ease of use, so most people will find it relatively easy to navigate. I will be happy to create boards and categories for anyone who asks. Please read the Rules and Regulations before beginning. Thank you for your interest and participation.
Love Always,
Bec
